Smooth Move on the Streets

"It's not just dancing," Serega Kundik said. "It's moving to what you're feeling."

The music bumps and the two street performers move their bodies through the beat. Kundik and his dance partner Mudiwa Windmil Dzi compete on a street dancing team called "Flying Aces," but today there is no competition. Just a performance on the streets of Oxford.

A crowd of about 50 people trickled into a circle and I couldn't help but join to see their impromptu performance.

The two moved as though each joint in their body was reacting to the beat--it wasn't like anything I've seen before

"Street dance is like an evolved version of breakdancing," Dzi said. "Plus breakdancing hurts, sometimes you hit the ground hard, but it's not that way with street dancing."

Street performances I've seen in the past seem to have the sole purpose of earning a few dollars, but these performers used their moment in the spotlight to practice instead.

"We do it because it's a good chance to meet new people, and practice our routines for future competitions," Kundik said.

It was a short five minute performance, but it was quite a show. Kundik and Dzi were great at providing a moment of entertainment and sharing a piece of their culture with me and fellow Oxford visitors.

So many interesting people here in the U.K. with stories of movement throughout their life. Kundik and Dzi were able to stand out in their story of life by showing it with a pep in their step.
